Being that I work in the birthing world, my kids know much
more about where babies come from then the average child. Whenever I come home
from a birth the kids want to hear all about it. Remie asks all sorts of
questions about the baby’s position, contractions, dilation and the water
breaking. Although the kids know a lot about how a baby is born, I still shield
them from a few of the details. I haven’t yet disclosed where exactly the baby comes
out. So far the kids are satisfied knowing that a special hole opens up and the
mommy works very hard and pushes the baby out.
That brings me to today’s conversation at lunch. Remie was
asking me a lot of question about the baby in my belly. He was concerned that
if I threw up would I taste the baby or choke on the head. I explained to him
that the baby isn’t actually in my stomach and that women have a cool thing
called a uterus that the baby lives in. Remie was trying to visualize what a uterus
was and because I lacked any other illustration, I compared it to a balloon
filled with water and the baby lived inside. It clicked for him and he said “Oh
so when the balloon breaks that’s when your water breaks and the contractions
start!” Precisely. Then he shocks me by saying “When the hole opens up and the
baby comes out, I’m going to stick my head up there and look around!” I had to control my laughter! Poor guy is
just so interested in the process that he really wants to see what this whole
birthing thing is about! I love his innocence!
