A few months ago Remie had a bite of my peanut butter sandwich and had a severe allergic reaction to it. We then did the scratch test to determine if there are any other foods that he is allergic to. To my horror, Remie's entire back broke out in hives and when the dr read the results she said that every food reacted even the control that wasn't supposed to react. So then we were sent to the lab for bloodwork. It came back that Remie isn't allergic to peanuts, just egg whites. This completely confused the allergist so she wanted to do a peanut challenge with Remie to be positive that he is or isn't allergic to peanuts. Today was the day for the dreaded peanut challenge. This is when we go to the allergist, she feeds Remie peanut butter multiple times and watches to see if there is a reaction. After the first taste of peanut butter, Remie got a few little hives on his chin but nothing major. Then he ate a BIG scoop of peanut butter and his little body was fine. He had no reaction whatsoever. We were very pleased that he had no breathing problems from the peanuts. The allergist told me that in her oppinion, Remie is not allergic to pb but she still doesn't understand why he had such a severe reaction a few months ago. She told me to keep Remie away from peanut butter for a few more years but I dont have to be overly concerned if he accidentally ingests it. That is great news for the Verougstraete family! I know from friends that a peanut allergy is very serious!
Here is a picture of Remie and I at the doctor's office just fooling around while we wait for more peanut butter!
