Speech Evaluation
I was concerned that Charlotte was behind in the development of her speech so I took her to the MISD for an evaluation. First they did a hearing test. Charlotte passed with flying colors. Next we spoke with a speech pathologist about my concerns. I told them that Charlotte speaks but doesn't have many words in her vocabulary. I also said that Charlotte doesn't attempt to say new words, she would much rather act out what she wants you to know or say "that" instead of the correct word for the item. We let Charlotte play while the pathologist observed her speech and behavior. Of course, Charlotte was being a little ham and had everyone wrapped around her little finger in a matter of moments. Then they did some simple testing on Charlotte to determine her level of comprehension and understanding. I was very surprised at how well she did. Finally at the end, they told me that Charlotte did not qualify for speech theraphy. They kind of giggled when they told me this and then said that she was not at all behind in her language but instead she was very excelled and they would consider her gifted. I had to laugh at myself because I thought that my little sweetie was delayed and would need special education but in actuality she's a little smarty pants. The pathologist said that Charlotte is able to say what she wants if it's important but they think that she doesn't feel the need to talk because Remie talks for her. They suggested that I enroll Charlotte in some toddler classes or play groups so that she could have some "Charlotte time" and not have to compete with her big brother for the opportunity to speak!
